OUR JUBILARIAN: On the 70th Anniversary of Oleksandr Mykolaiovych Trofymchuk, Corresponding Member of the NAS of Ukraine

On September 1, 1955, Oleksandr Mykolaiovych Trofymchuk was born — an outstanding Ukrainian scientist, specialist in informatics, geomechanics, and geoecology, Doctor of Technical Sciences, Professor, Honored Worker of Science and Technology of Ukraine, Laureate of the State Prize of Ukraine in Science and Technology and in Education, Laureate of the V.S. Mikhalevich Prize of the NAS of Ukraine, holder of the Order of Merit (3rd class), and Corresponding Member of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.

In 1980, Oleksandr Mykolaiovych completed postgraduate studies at the Institute of Hydromechanics of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, where he worked until 1998. In 1998–2003, he served as Deputy Director for Research and Acting Director of the Ukrainian Institute for Environmental and Resource Studies under the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine. Since 2004, he has been Deputy Director for Research, and since 2016 — Director of the Institute of Telecommunications and Global Information Space of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.

The subjects of Oleksandr Trofymchuk’s scientific research include informatics, geomechanics and environmental safety. He developed approaches to solving scientific problems of great theoretical and practical significance. He created dynamic models and methods for solving seismic resistance problems of structures considering their interaction with complex soil foundations. He developed mathematical models of saturated porous media and, based on them, theoretically and experimentally established the laws of wave propagation in these media, investigating the phenomena of soil dilatancy and rarefaction.

Oleksandr Mykolaiovych laid the foundations of a new direction in the use of geographic information systems (GIS) and remote sensing of the Earth (RSE) in geoecology, in analyzing natural resource potential, optimizing pollution of surface waters, soils and the atmosphere, and forecasting geophysical events, including geological and environmental aspects of reducing landslide hazards. He proposed methods for designing decision support information systems (DSS) — an effective tool for forecasting financial and economic processes and the environmental state of territories, particularly on the basis of structural-parametric model adaptation. He developed information-analytical systems for assessing economic situations and applied Bayesian networks in data analysis systems. He developed an information technology for modeling and designing multiproduct communication networks with discrete flows, which includes a conceptual basis, concepts, principles, mathematical models, theoretical methods, algorithms, technologies, methodologies, schemes and scenarios aimed at the adaptive use of network resource potential under given constraints.

Since 2015, O.M. Trofymchuk has been carrying out scientific and technical developments in the security and defense sector of Ukraine. Under his leadership, a software-technological complex for detecting vessels violating established navigation rules in maritime areas of Ukraine was created, which is actively used in combat tasks.

Significant scientific and practical results by O.M. Trofymchuk have been implemented during his leadership of major international projects on environmental management development in Ukraine (Canada, USA, Japan, European projects INTAS, TEMPUS).

Under the leadership of O.M. Trofymchuk, the automated information system “Unified State Register of Individual Entrepreneurs and Legal Entities,” the information-analytical support system for rational nature management (in 12 regional state administrations of Ukraine), and the intelligent automated information-analytical system for supporting the budget process (Committee on Budget Issues of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine) were created and put into operation.

The developments of O.M. Trofymchuk have been implemented in construction, particularly in analyzing the dynamics of the “Shelter” object of the Chornobyl NPP, the Juraguá nuclear power plant (Cuba), the Belene nuclear power plant (Bulgaria), in designing marine gravity platforms, hydraulic structures, and in compiling environmental maps and atlases of the regions of Ukraine. To fill and verify information databases, since 2008 the Institute of Telecommunications and Global Information Space of the NAS of Ukraine has regularly conducted environmental expeditions to protected natural areas, water bodies, landfills, etc., of which O.M. Trofymchuk is the leader and a permanent participant.

The scientific results of O.M. Trofymchuk are reflected in 610 publications, including 36 monographs. He carries out extensive teaching work. He created a scientific school in information technologies and mathematical modeling in geoecology, recognized by both national and international scientific communities. He has trained 33 highly qualified specialists: 14 Doctors of Sciences, 17 Candidates of Sciences, and 2 Doctors of Philosophy, and currently supervises a number of postgraduate and doctoral students. Overall, considering the students trained by the Doctors of Sciences prepared by O.M. Trofymchuk, his scientific school includes 53 Doctors and Candidates of Sciences.

Since 2002, he has been a Professor at the Kyiv National University of Construction and Architecture (part-time).
O.M. Trofymchuk is a member of the Section on Rational Nature Management of the Committee on State Prizes of Ukraine in Science and Technology, the National Committee of Ukraine on Theoretical and Applied Mechanics, a board member of the International Consortium on Landslides, a member of the Scientific Advisory Board of the International Society for Geosciences, and of its Scientific Committee SWS Earth & Planetary Sciences (EPS).

O.M. Trofymchuk is the Chairman of the Academic Council of the Institute, Chairman of Specialized Academic Council No. D26.255.01 for the defense of Doctoral dissertations in the specialties “Information Technologies” and “Mathematical Modeling and Numerical Methods,” Editor-in-Chief of the scientific journal “Ecological Safety and Environmental Management,” a member of the editorial board of the international journal “Problems of Control and Informatics,” and Editor-in-Chief of the proceedings of the international conference “International Multidisciplinary Scientific GeoConference Surveying, Geology and Mining, Ecology and Management (SGEM) (2021–2023),” which are indexed in Scopus.

In February 2024, for his conscious civic position and support that brings our common victory closer, he received a Commendation from the Intelligence Directorate of the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine, and in 2025 — commendations from the Support Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine and the Defence Intelligence of Ukraine.

The contribution of O.M. Trofymchuk to strengthening the scientific and technical potential of the state is significant and strategically important, demonstrating not only his high level as a scientist and organizer, but also his personal dedication to national interests and the future of Ukraine.

The staff of the Institute, colleagues and students express their sincere gratitude for his fruitful work, dedication and wise leadership, and wish Oleksandr Mykolaiovych strong health, inexhaustible energy, new scientific and creative achievements, and further success in his managerial activities for the benefit of the Institute and Ukrainian science.
